Rath Yatra
Rath Yatra is one of the most important festivals that take place in the Odia community. It is celebrated on the 2nd of July in the year 2024. Rath Yatra is the celebration of Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his aunt’s house. Thousands of people come together to pull the chariot of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. The chariot is pulled from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple, which is about 3 km away.
Niladri Bije
Niladri Bije is the final day of the Rath Yatra festival. It is celebrated on the 10th of July in the year 2024. On this day, Lord Jagannath returns to his temple after his annual visit to his aunt’s house. It is believed that Lord Jagannath’s wife, Goddess Lakshmi, locks the temple door and does not let him in. To appease her, Lord Jagannath offers her Rasgulla, a sweet delicacy. This is a very important day for the Odia community.
Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the 16th of July in the year 2024. It is a day to honor and show gratitude to our teachers or gurus. The day is celebrated by performing puja and offering sweets and fruits to the guru. It is believed that on this day, Lord Buddha gave his first sermon, making it an important day for Buddhists as well.
Kumar Purnima
Kumar Purnima is celebrated on the 24th of July in the year 2024. It is a festival dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On this day, young girls dress up in new clothes and worship Lord Kartikeya for a good husband and a happy married life. They also play a game called “puchi,” which is similar to hopscotch.
